Project Description
Hambleton Steel delivered the complete structural steelwork package for the landmark redevelopment of Sheffield City College, a major sustainable education project and prominent feature of Sheffield’s skyline. The scheme included a ten-storey steel-framed teaching tower with a seven-storey glazed atrium, together with a four-storey catering block and a four-storey steel-framed sports hall, all constructed on a live college campus.
Our scope comprised the fabrication and erection of all structural steelwork, along with metal decking and edge protection. Steel was selected for its lightweight properties and speed of erection, enabling efficient construction above a concrete basement and transfer structure.
Challenges l Solutions
The project’s most complex element was the striking curved seven-storey atrium, formed from CHS 3D lattice trusses and requiring exceptional fabrication accuracy. To meet tight tolerances, Hambleton Steel carried out a full trial erection prior to delivery. Long-span trusses for the sports hall and bespoke steel transfer structures supporting roof-mounted wind turbines further demonstrated Hambleton Steel’s technical capability.
The project stands as a sustainable educational landmark, showcasing Hambleton Steel’s expertise in delivering complex, high-rise steel structures.
