The Hospitals Transformation Project is a multi-million pound expansion of healthcare facilities at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital that will optimise healthcare across the two sites. It will bring together purpose-built facilities to support modern healthcare practices and create a positive environment for staff and patients.
The Royal Shrewsbury hospital will become the centre for critical care, housing the Emergency Department, Critical Care Unit and Women and Children’s services, while the Princess Royal Hospital will become the Planned Care site, accommodating the Urgent Treatment Centre and Surgical Centre.
Vinci, the main contractor for the Hospitals Transformation Project, worked closely with the hospitals to leave a legacy in the community by providing work experience opportunities and apprentice programmes. In total over the full term of the project they expect to provide 400 weeks of training and upskilling for site operatives, 145 weeks of work placements and hands-on experience plus 2,202 apprentice weeks, with apprentices contributing across a variety of roles.
The 27,000 square metre expansion of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) will include a new acute medical floor and an improved front entrance on the ground floor. The other floors will be home to Women and Children’s services and purpose-built critical care services.
Providing faster access to the right care and clinicians, all the specialist teams that support the Emergency Department will be based at the RSH from 2028. This will mean quicker decisions about patient care and a reduction in time patients stay in hospital.
As part of this project Hambleton Steel is delivering a complex and multi-phased steelwork package at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, encompassing both new construction and refurbishment within a live healthcare environment. Our scope includes the fabrication and installation of new structural steelwork to Block 60, supporting the Atrium, Staircore 1, and Roof structures, as well as extensive modifications and strengthening works to the existing Block 31.
Working within an operational hospital brings unique challenges, managing noise and vibration levels, ensuring uninterrupted access for emergency routes, and complying with clinical scheduling constraints.
Our experienced team is well-versed in navigating these constraints, ensuring seamless integration with clinical operations, minimal disruption to patient care, and delivering to the highest quality and safety standards.
This multi-million pound investment as part of our Hospitals Transformation Programme is a once in a generation investment to improve care for everyone in the area with modern, purpose-built facilities.
