The Wellingborough School in Northamptonshire was established over 400 years ago and it is currently undergoing a 30 year modernisation plan. The school was founded in 1595 as a Tudor-era grammar school and it has been developed many times over the centuries. It currently accommodates students from nursery age through to sixth form.
The first phase of the renovation project involves the expansion of the design, technology and science facilities. The new Technology Centre and Gatehouse will feature workshops, a lecture theatre for 220 students, seminar rooms and a computer lab. The two storey building has a full height atrium and several pitched roofs. The centre will also house a new reception area, medical and welfare facilities, as well as multi-purpose teaching spaces.
The existing Design and Technology department is currently off site. The development of the new centre was seen as a priority by the school as part of its modernisation plan so that it could sit alongside the IT department.
The design and materials used in the construction of the building were chosen with care to reflect the school’s heritage while also creating a modern and innovative space. The large glass fronted reception will flood the area with natural light, while the red brick and stone reflects the Victorian era.
Hambleton Steel provided the design and build of the structural steelwork, thermal breaks and the metal decking for the building. One of the challenges with this project was that the roof was a fairly complex design, with several pitched areas. This required the team to use deep purlins to handle the snow drift, which in turn meant we had to be careful with the bulk heads that the steel created.
Future development plans for the school include new sports, science and teaching facilities, as well as a new art and theatre venue. The new Technology Centre will provide students with state of the art facilities which will enhance the school’s offering in design technology, computing and food technology.
