Hambleton Steel delivered the structural steelwork package for Heworth Pool in Gateshead, a modern curved roof leisure centre designed to provide high-quality community swimming facilities.
The project features a striking curved roof structure formed using glulam rafters, creating an open, airy internal environment while achieving the architectural vision for a flowing roofline. The steelwork frame was carefully coordinated to support the timber roof structure and extensive glazed elevations, ensuring both structural efficiency and aesthetic impact.
With approximately 110 tonnes of hot rolled steelwork installed, the scheme demonstrates Hambleton Steel’s expertise in delivering complex leisure projects where steel interfaces seamlessly with engineered timber elements.
Heworth Leisure Centre in Gateshead features a steel frame structure incorporating 19-metre-long glulam rafters forming the pool hall roof. The building includes a four-lane 25m swimming pool, learner and infants pools, and the North of England’s first indoor FlowRider surf attraction, alongside fitness and studio facilities arranged over two storeys. A curved roof comprising three barrel vaults creates the centre’s distinctive architectural form, with double-curved glulam rafters connected to curved steel members. Extensive glazed elevations are supported by an architectural steel bracing system, while long-span steel transfer beams accommodate open, column-free spaces and a cantilevered first-floor balcony overlooking the pool hall.

Working with Hambleton Steel on Manchester City Campus College was an enjoyable experience for ourselves and the wider design team.
