Bank House in Newcastle is a part of £100m redevelopment of Pilgrim Street in the city. The site, once the home of a Bank of England building, will now house a 14 storey, grade A office building being constructed by Bowmer and Kirkland.
The new building, designed by Ryder Architecture, is one of the largest new office buildings built in the city in many years. The large expanse of floor to ceiling windows provides a 360 degree view of the city and Hambleton Steel was responsible for the steelwork fabrication, erection and we applied perimeter intumescent paint to the building on behalf of Bowmer and Kirkland. The office space is being developed to achieve a BREAAM rating of Excellent and the design is intended to maximise the amount of natural light in the building.
Initial work in the building included demolition of a building from the 1960s, and breaking the three storey underground vault from the former bank. During construction of Bank House, fifty percent of all contractors on the project were employed from the North East region. Bank House is an addition to the city’s existing commercial district and by creating a modern and sustainable environment it is expected to attract attention from a number of large global organisations.
Features of the building include a 4,500 square foot reception area, charging points for electric bikes and a number of sustainability elements to reduce carbon emissions during the lifecycle of the building. These include electric heating and cooling using air pumps, all electricity for the building comes from renewable sources, sustainable technology to monitor energy consumption, options to reduce waste, bicycle maintenance facilities and an urban drainage system which manages surface water run-off.
Other buildings to be completed on the Pilgrim Street development include a new public square, destination food and beverage offerings and a new 5 star boutique hotel which will transform and regenerate the area.
