Located in the north-eastern coastal town of Redcar, the Leisure and Community Heart forms a key part of the town’s wider regeneration programme, drawing on Redcar’s long association with steelmaking.
Hambleton Steel was instructed by Willmott Dixon to deliver the structural steelwork package for the new Redcar Leisure & Community Heart - a major leisure centre and civic office development designed to serve the wider community.
The project comprises a multi-use leisure facility incorporating sports halls, swimming pool areas, civic office space, and associated amenities. The steel frame solution included approximately 1,225 tonnes of hot rolled steelwork and 19 tonnes of cold rolled sections, forming the primary structure across the development. Three large-span trusses were installed to the sports hall along with four cellular beams to the swimming pool area, with the paint specification adjusted to meet the requirements of the chlorinated environment.
Project Challenges
The scheme was delivered within a tight site footprint, making logistics and delivery coordination critical to maintaining programme. Careful sequencing and close collaboration with the main contractor ensured efficient installation despite restricted access and high activity levels on site.
