Scope of work:

  1. Structural steelwork
  2. PC Stairs
  3. Metal Decking

The construction of the New Covent Garden Markets in London by Vinci Construction will make it the largest wholesale fresh produce market in the UK. Construction is being carried out in several phases over many years and the final phase is expected to be complete in 2027. The new design will consolidate the market south of the Vauxhall railway viaduct and this land will be transformed into a residential neighbourhood.

For the B3 building, Hambleton Steel fabricated, supplied, and installed approximately 1,000 tonnes of structural steelwork, along with subtrade packages including metal decking, precast stairs, cold-rolled purlins, and stair rails, all executed to the highest standards of precision and quality.

The existing markets and surrounding infrastructure was deteriorating due to its age. As part of the redevelopment, the new buildings will make better use of the layout for pedestrians, movement of goods, forklifts and other vehicles so they are not hindering one another. The new blocks are aligned north to south and divided into 6 metre wide traders units with vehicle doors facing external yards.

External mezzanine and plant access walkways run along the length of each block above the vehicle doors, providing safe pedestrian routes to every trader’s unit, making it in line with the Workplace Transport Strategy. The new market will be a state-of-the-art modern facility that meets building performance targets and provides a food-clean environment. It separates pedestrians from vehicles on the hard-standings to create a safer working environment for traders, buyers and visitors.

Hambleton Steel were awarded the structural steel packages across multiple phases in the construction of various warehouses for New Covent Garden Markets. Business continuity is vital for the traders working in the markets which is another reason for the project being completed in phases. Phase 4 of the project will comprise of 24 units and it will link sections together. It will become the new home for four wholesalers, Gilgrove, French Garden, Supreme Salads and Premier Fruits.

The new market will be a state of the art modern facility that will help to change the perception of the market to a modern, clean, state-of-the-art facility for the 21st century.
