Scope of work:

Hambleton Steel delivered approximately 390 tonnes of structural steelwork for Houghton Primary Care Centre in Houghton-le-Spring, working with Willmott Dixon on this major healthcare development. The £20m centre was designed as an integrated community facility, bringing together GP services, an illness and injuries unit, diagnostics and planned care, physiotherapy and a 24-bed rehabilitation unit alongside health, wellbeing and leisure facilities. The development was designed to help provide care closer to home and reduce unnecessary hospital admissions, creating a modern environment focused on patient recovery, rehabilitation and community wellbeing.

The Hambleton Steel package incorporated approximately 390 tonnes of structural steel, together with precast concrete (PCC) planks and stair systems.

Houghton Primary Care Centre also presented significant sustainability and building-performance requirements. The completed facility achieved BREEAM Outstanding, with a final score of 85.31%, and was recognised through the BREEAM Awards and other industry awards for its sustainability performance. The building incorporated renewable technologies including solar thermal and photovoltaic panels, an 18m-high wind turbine, natural ventilation and other low-carbon measures, contributing to energy consumption and emissions reported as 38% lower than a standard healthcare building.

One of the reasons I chose an apprenticeship was because I could earn and learn at the same time. Working at Hambleton Steel has provided me with day-to-day training and experience which has helped me understand the industry and business.
