Hambleton Steel played a key role in the delivery of Coronation Square, a major £190 million regeneration scheme in East London for Taylor Wimpey. At the heart of this development sits a vibrant civic and market square, designed as a dynamic public space featuring landscaped gardens, a large water feature, and flexible areas for community events. Beneath this central green space, Hambleton Steel delivered a critical structural solution that enabled the creation of usable space below while supporting the complex loading requirements above.
Engineering a Complex Substructure Solution
The project required the design and installation of a series of heavy steel trusses positioned beneath the central square. This presented a significant engineering challenge, as the structure needed to support landscaped public realm areas, including trees, paving, and high footfall usage, while maintaining open space below.
Working on a design and build (D&B) basis, Hambleton Steel took ownership of the truss design. Rather than simply following the initial engineer’s concept, the team applied their technical expertise to refine and optimise the solution.
Value Engineering Through Smarter Fabrication
Hambleton Steel enhanced the original design by increasing member sizes, allowing for a far more efficient fabrication process. This strategic adjustment eliminated the need for hundreds of stiffeners, significantly reducing fabrication complexity, time, and cost.
Although the revised design introduced additional steel mass, this was more than offset by the savings achieved in fabrication. The result was a more practical, buildable solution that delivered measurable cost efficiencies without compromising structural performance, demonstrating Hambleton Steel’s commitment to value engineering and intelligent design.
Supporting a Thriving Community Hub
The completed structure underpins a development comprising approximately 750 new homes arranged around shared courtyards and green spaces. The central square now serves as a focal point for the community, hosting markets, events, and social activities, alongside integrated amenities including a leisure centre, medical hub, nursery, and retail spaces.
The wider scheme also prioritises sustainability and biodiversity, with around 170 new trees planted and ecological features such as bird boxes and bug habitats incorporated throughout the site.
Project Scale and Delivery
In total, the project involved approximately 1,300 tonnes of steelwork, including around 900 tonnes of hot rolled steel. Hambleton Steel’s contribution was instrumental in enabling the ambitious architectural vision for Coronation Square, delivering both structural integrity and commercial value.
