Active dedication to social value: Doug Willis, Senior Contracts Manager at Hambleton Steel, spends his donated company volunteer days to support those living homeless on the streets of Leeds every Christmas.

On Christmas Eve, Doug Willis, Senior Contracts Manager at Hambleton Steel, spent his donated company volunteer day to support those living homeless on the streets of Leeds. Joining with the Homeless Street Angels initiative, Doug and his wife delivered Christmas meals, care parcels, bedding, and other essentials to the homeless community in Leeds, offering much-needed support during this challenging time of year.

As part of our social value commitments, we offer our employees voluntary days for charitable support and volunteering. An example of this is our very own Doug Willis, Senior Contracts Manager and his commitment to the Homeless Street Angels initiative.

We're proud to share the work Doug Willis our Senior Contracts Manager does, to continue supporting/involvement with  Homeless street angels - Find out more from Doug below 👇

'Fee(my partner) and I first forged a connection with Homeless Street Angels several years ago while Fee was working for Street Paws, one of HSL’s previous Charities of the Year. Since forming in 2016 (and achieving charity status in 2019), the work they do for people experiencing homelessness has been nothing short of incredible. A quick visit to their website shows just how dedicated and tireless this small team is. Following my pending retirement, I’m hoping to spend more time volunteering throughout the year, with the aim of becoming one of their Guardian Angels.

𝐎𝐧 22𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 2025, we attended their charity fundraising auction, themed around The Greatest Showman – and it truly was a cracking evening. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses and artists, there were some fantastic auction prizes on offer, including artwork, beauty products, signed sports memorabilia, and hotel and holiday accommodation. How these ladies manage to secure such amazing donations never ceases to amaze me. I was lucky enough to win an extra prize on the night, a doodle on a napkin by one of the artists.

I also used my charity day from work on 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐄𝐯𝐞 (24𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 2025) to help out again, supporting the team as they fed people experiencing homelessness and provided much-needed essentials and gifts at what can be an incredibly difficult time of year. For obvious reasons, there are limited photos from the day, but I can honestly say everyone we met was hugely appreciative of the support.

A huge thank you to everyone involved with Homeless Street Angels for the compassion, energy, and commitment you show every day. It’s a privilege to support you.'
