The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Woolwich is benefitting from a ward extension to increase the number of beds for patients. The QEH is one of the busiest hospitals in London and often receives more ambulances than any other hospital in London. In the past the hospital has been unable to accommodate all of its patients in Accident and Emergency.

With the new building extension this will no longer be the case and the two new short-stay inpatient wards will mean that patients who come through A&E and require further hospital care will receive faster treatment in the right environment. The wards will provide an additional 44 beds for patients and it will help Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust make major improvements to patient care.

The QEH is undergoing a multi-million pound expansion and in addition to the new beds the hospital will also be able to provide the associated administration and support. There will also be additional space for the hospital’s existing operations, including more clinical space as other new planned infrastructure improvement works to take place.

This ward extension is one of a number of important projects that are underway as the hospital invests in modernising its facilities to further improve the experience for patients, their families and staff.

As part of this project, Hambleton Steel successfully delivered the structural steelwork for the ward extension at QEH. The scope included the full 3 storey beam-and-column structure, featuring PC stair cores and associated secondary steel.

We fabricated and installed approximately 500 tonnes of steel, supporting the development of new clinical accommodation across multiple floors. Working within a live hospital environment, our team and all of the other contractors coordinated closely with the principal contractor, and with clinicians, the estates team, facilities management and other stakeholders in the hospital to ensure safe, efficient delivery with minimal disruption to ongoing day-to-day operations.

One of the reasons I chose an apprenticeship was because I could earn and learn at the same time. Working at Hambleton Steel has provided me with day-to-day training and experience which has helped me understand the industry and business.

Working with Hambleton Steel on Manchester City Campus College was an enjoyable experience for ourselves and the wider design team. Hambleton brought their knowledge and skill by collaboratively working with the whole team from RIBA Stages 2/3 until completion by problem solving, giving advise on buildability and bringing efficiencies to the design to ensure it maintained within budget.
