The brief
Client - Willmott Dixon
The Manchester College (TMC) is a 5 storey structure for higher and further education students.
TMC has a mixture of 150mm and 200mm composite concrete slab using a re-entrant metal decking throughout all floors. Due to a retaining wall down one elevation of the building, half of the columns along one gridline have been stepped in, creating a cantilever at level 02.
In the buildings atrium there is an entire self-contained theatre known as the Jewel Box. The Jewel Box roof is supported by 3 trusses which in turn hold up the columns for the floors above. Because this is a sound sensitive space, all of the structure surrounding it have been acoustically isolated to stop the transmission of sound. There is a professional quality film studio at ground level to allow students to learn and produce tv and film content. Above the atrium there are 3 rows of northlights supported by walkways on the glulam rafters.
The approach
We engineered a bespoke cladding support system.
The client originally proposed using glulam columns and beams to surround the atrium, this unfortunately was too expensive for the budget.
The outcomes
This allowed the main contractor to start the cladding subcontractor without having to wait to for the concrete floors to be finished.
We utilised steel beam and columns with a glulam cladding. This left the only structural glulam as the Roof beams on show in the atrium.
